the weight of no words.

just four of an entire tours worth of posters
from one of my favorite bands.
including one from some chaps who live right down the street.
make sure you check out the rest.

i love seeing sounds reinterpreted in a single image.

taco time

photo via freep

you've probably heard a little something about
the growing gourmet lunch truck scene, yes?
perhaps you've seen the great truck race on food network.
i fell in love with the idea shooting gads of
tv commercials on the west coast.
my very favorite truck was called "off the shelf."
absolutely incredible.
their french toast sticks are deep fried in funnel cake batter
for crying out loud.
amazing traveling food? sold.

needless to say, i'd been waiting for this phenomenon
to make it's way to my neck of the woods.
so, last week when i saw a big shiny truck
{all i could make out in passing was the word tacos
and the twitter logo} in my neighborhood
i crossed my fingers and toes.
later found out it was jacques tacos.
LUCKILY they had my neighborhood
on their schedule for the next day.
YES.
aaaand scene.

here's the gritty.
i was too excited to let the long ass line dampen my taco spirits.
good thing it moved pretty quickly.

i followed my original game plan to try one of each.
 one braised beef short rib.
one grilled chicken.
one slow roasted pork.
one marinated avocado.
all dressed in black bean & corn salsa, queso fresco, and sauce vert.

{some crazy force took over my brain for a moment
and made me think i'd be able to save half of each
for my husband. that didn't happen. sorry, love.}

they were all super delicious.
tortillas were warm and their texture perfect.
the marinated avocado was creamy and dreamy. flavor was fresh.
maybe even a hint of lime. mmm.
generally speaking, i usually pass on grilled chicken.
it's boring. most times dry. in the case of tacos,
it's usually dripping with mysterious orange overkill.
THIS chicken was the exception.
perfectly tender and juicy. spiced just right.

the slow roasted pork was out of this world.
again, flavors and smoky goodness shining through with
being drowned and sloppy.
the short rib? also a hit
for similar reasons.
nothing too heavy or rich.
you can actually taste the beef.

i polished it all off with the tiniest can of coke zero
{seriously, it's small enough to fit in your palm.
i'm a sucker for tiny things.}
and gathered my thoughts.

so far, what i really like about these:
you can taste what you're eating.
everything doesn't just taste like generic mexican flavoring.
 suppose i'll go back again
{maybe even today}
just to be sure.

favorites?
hard to say.
my next order will probably be
two avocado. one pork. one chicken.
all amazing. but, when i finished the avocado
i felt like i wasn't quite ready to be done with it.

oh.
one last thing.
it doesn't hurt that the owners
named the whole operation after
their darling english bullie.
behold jacques.

corny & carny

took a stroll outside my office building at lunch
in search of a hiding place where i could read.
found a carnival along the river instead.
they had corndogs.
my favorite.
the food vendors and a few rides are open
but they're still setting up for the most part.
behind the scenes carnival action
is awesome.
reminds me of the jerk.
one of my all time favorite movies.
anyway, i snapped some photos
with my shakeit app.
'twas fun.
 ahhhh. summer in the d.
who else is ready for the weekend?

weekend. weekbegin.

personal maintenance may have reached an all time low over the weekend but i sure did get a lot accomplished. there were a few "oversights" along the way. for instance,  i went on a cleaning frenzy throughout the house but completely neglected my own personal disaster known as my closet. and by closet i'm referring to the guest bedroom commandeered as my boudoir. don't be misled to believe it's something fancy because of the word boudoir. the mountains of unfolded laundry on the bed rule out any semblance of sophistication. i could definitely replicate the photo above. in fact, i could easily make a chaise lounge. perhaps even a sectional. i'm ashamed to admit it's a common offense {varying magnitude}
unless we're having company.

ok back to accomplishments. by now you can see i use that word loosely. jesse and i stopped by cafe habana, a local fave cuban restaurant. SO good. the accomplishment part {save leaving the house} is adventuring away from my usual pan con bistec {grilled hanger steak sammy} and going for the fish tacos. THEY WERE SO GOOD. rare ahi, jicama slaw, avacado, lime crema, served with saffron rice. jeez.  i had full intentions of snapping a shot but they were housed  too quickly. by the time i remembered the original plan, only small bits of saffron rice remained. sorry. BUT, i did snap a few shots of the restaurant janky iphone style.  i love the contrast of fancy chandeliers and industrial architecture. great vibes, this place. perhaps you should stop by so i will be motivated to clean up the mountains of clothes in the guest room and then i'll take you our for fish tacos?
win win, right?

ghetto fabulous

epic estate sale today.
mid-century furniture.
amazing seventies art.
swatch watches in the original packaging.
quite a thriller.
it's a two tripper.

not in the nicest neighborhood though.
on the outskirts of detroit.
not super safe.
but riddled with wonder.
and i love love love
to explore the grit.

anyway, i saw this today.
down the street from the estate sale.
apologies that the shots aren't great.
i had to be quick.
figured a solo girl
hopping out of a volvo
snapping pictures on an iphone
wasn't the best idea.
especially after witnessing a domestic dispute
a few minutes prior to.

apparently someone installed this carved wood piece
over an empty, burned out window.
bizarre isn't it?
sooooo, anyone want to come visit me in detroit?
don't be scurred.
it's not all like this.
at all.

snappy yum yums

snaps from the royal oak farmer's market on saturday. stacks and packs of beauties that rarely make it to my table top {i don't know what to do with a radish and 50% of my household doesn't care for eggplant}. at any rate, now comes the transition into fall veg. already seeing lots of creepy {but super fun} gourds and such. in the meantime of the full trans, i'm going on a daily tomato eating frienzy.
one tomato+one scallion+one cup of cottage cheese=one happy me. tomato lovers unite!

dune it well

well, well, well. take look at this little champ from yesterday's daily finds on etsy.

straight from the mitten, representing traverse city, hende brings us this Lake Michigan sand dune inspired organic tank. contrast stitching. made to order. clever and beautiful. think i'll go with charcoal stitching. what about you? you know you want one too...

thank you, hende, for making lovely things.
